Chicago Fire
A very important in history was a disaster! It was the Chicago fire. There are 2 different stories to the Chicago fire. Some people believe a family's cow kicked over a lantern and started the fire and other people believe that it was a natural disasters. We don't know how it actually happened it will still be a mystery. This fire destroyed most of the city. One of the only surviving buildings is the Chicago water tower. Because of where Chicago was built, the fire did more damage. Also because of the town's architecture, more destruction happened. Most of Chicago's buildings were all wooden, which is highly flammable. The wood created more damage and made the fire spread more and larger. The Chicago fire is an important part of history because we wouldn't have thought of building 10 stories high buildings if the fire didn't burn down most of the city. The Chicago fire taught us not to use wood so much. We learn from our mistakes.

Transportation
The type of transportation that they mostly used back then was riding boats and canoes in the water and/or river. It's mostly used to carry goods and other materials to different areas to get more important stuff they need for stuff they have lots of.
People demanded transportation in their cities, so this is the first public transportation. This is called a horse-drawn omnibus. This usually carries 30-40 people and is pulled by a horse. This kind of transportation was developed in France in the 1600s.
Around the 1850s, they built the train as another way of transportation, it was very popular and most people rode it to get to work everyday!
Food
The settlers and farmers often ate the same thing, but they sometimes ate their food raw. Many people lived on farms so they had cows, pigs, and chickens.
